Daddy’s Home was an unexpected hit that did not necessarily leave viewers with any sense of urgency regarding a sequel. The movie, which followed two men competing for the heart of one family, found heart and laughs a plenty, but when the credits rolled, the story it had to tell was more or less told in full. Still, what would a successful film in the new millennium be without a completely unnecessary sequel to ensure every possible consumer dollar is squeezed from the newly minted brand name?

Enter Daddy’s Home 2, an upcoming sequel that builds on the plot of the first film by introducing two grandfathers to the mix. In the sequel to the 2015 global smash, father and stepfather, Dusty (Mark Wahlberg) and Brad (Will Ferrell) have joined forces to provide their kids with the perfect Christmas. Their newfound partnership is put to the test when Dusty’s old-school, macho Dad (Mel Gibson) and Brad’s ultra-affectionate and emotional Dad (John Lithgow) arrive just in time to throw the holiday into complete chaos.

In short: It’s the same premise as the first film, only this time the stars of the first film serve as background players so more senior acting talent can take the spotlight. You can view the trailer above.

Daddy’s Home 2 will roll into theaters on November 10, making it among the first family-friendly holiday features to hit cinemas in 2017. The last film had legs that helped it stay in top box office ranking for months, and I’m certain the studio behind this sequel is hoping for more of the same.
