Brunswick, New Jersey’s steve. is the type of pop-punk band that aims to be different. They encourage inclusivity, and favor making friends over fans. The band — comprised of guitarist/vocalist Ky O’Connor, guitarist/vocalist Nick Rapon, drummer/vocalist Zach Stier and bassist Eric Nuber — is not afraid of speaking up about the lack of representation in D.I.Y., and avoid playing shows where the lineup is all white men.
Recently, steve. announced their signing to I Surrender Records (Four Year Strong, I Am the Avalanche, Valencia) and will be releasing their new record, You Can Do This Too, on November 8th. The title of the record is one that’s meant to promote the idea that marginalized individuals can chase their artistic endeavors, even if there’s a crowd of people saying otherwise.
Now less than a month away from the album release, Substream is excited to be teaming up with steve. to exclusively premiere their new single, “Gansette.” It’s a high energy song that shows just what you can expect from this band, mixing a catchy pop-punk chorus with gritty verses to hook you in.
“I wrote this song for all the kids who do not feel like they’re cool enough to be in a band. It’s incredibly horrifying to go to a gig, see a band kill it, and then get “cool-guyed” by said band,” Sier tells Substream. “This creates an isolating feeling where you feel like you may never really fit in. Honestly, being in a band isn’t that glorious. However, going and supporting bands is not only fun, but satisfying to see people who are deserving achieve their goals. This song is a callout to all the jabronis out there who think they’re sick because they play guitar. I promise you, you’re not.”
