Angel Olsen is not one for half-measures. In all of her music and artistry, Olsen goes all in. The result is a body of work that is always evolving and shifting, but at the same time consistently breathtaking. In August she moved into the newest era of her career by revealing the title track and details from her upcoming album All Mirrors. She’s now shared “Lark,” another stunning single from the project.
“Lark” is a six minute long powerhouse. Hazy guitars bring us in, with Olsen musing about the trust and delicacy present in all human relationships. More strings steadily build up, and she sings with every ounce of her fire and soul once things build up. Strings soar over a determined drum, and the track ebbs and flows with a real sense of purpose, taking listeners on a deep, powerful journey. Olsen also released a video for “Lark,” which sees her taking a similarly emotional journey through life and nature.
This was clearly a big track for Olsen. She says
“‘Lark’ is a song that took many years to finish. The disjointed feelings and verses of this song began to make sense as a way for me to exercise a kind of journey through grieving, a kind of personal struggle. The message of the song developed at first from an argument I once had with someone about trust and support. Later, I pulled from recurring themes in my life as a musician and as a human that dreams for a living. It’s easy to promise the world to those we love, but what about when our dreams change and values split?”
