Every once in a while, you come across a piece of music that’s hard to pin down, and not easily defined by traditional genre terms. Today, we’re excited to be premiering “w / o,” the first single by Los Angeles-based duo F I N K E L. You could call it pop, and you could call it electro, and you could call it indie, but none of those terms would be quite right. One thing is for certain though: with a pulsating bass line and ethereal guitars, “w / o” is utterly hypnotic, and certainly futuristic.

“w / o” is accompanied by an animated music video, which was directed by Sanni Lahtinen. The video begins on a late night train ride; as a man steps off the train and into the night, the woman he was riding with is left distraught. When she escapes, flowers bloom and plants grow around her, but she’s left to explore the night on her own.

And yet, for as futuristic and forward-thinking as the music and the visual are, the theme of “w / o” is entirely down-to-earth: imagining a life without someone you hold dear to your heart is impossible to bear.

Formerly known as Less Is More and originally from Mackinac Island, MI, F I N K E L (and yes, it’s spelled just like that with the spacing – not “Finkel” or “FINKEL”) is an avante-garde duo consisting of Jane and Brian Spencer. They both contribute vocals; Jane also plays synth and Akai APC 40 and Brian adds guitar and APC 40.

“w / o” will officially be released on May 11. F I N K E L will be celebrating the song release with a Release BBQ on May 12; they’ll also be playing The Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles on June 1 (tickets available here). They are expecting to release more new music soon, so be sure to stay tuned with the band on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and their website for more information!
