You know the feeling that you get when you hear a song that you just know is gonna blow up? It’s kind of like you’ve caught lightning in a bottle and you can’t wait to share it with everyone because once they hear it, they’ll be singing all the same praises you are. Think the excitement of every single boy in the so bad it’s good movie-musical Newsies that I was forced to watch once a quarter in middle-school music. That’s almost exactly how I felt when I first heard Northern Faces insanely catchy new song, “Firecracker.”
Part of that excitement could stem from the fact that Northern Faces calls my community home. New York’s capital region houses a wide variety of characters and has given birth to acts like State Champs, Jouska, and Prince Daddy & The Hyena. It’s a well-kept secret that Albany is a hot-bed for some of the best rock music to come out of the last five years, and I’m happy to see Northern Faces has teamed up with hometown label Equal Vision Records to continue to push that trend forward.
“Firecracker” is undeniable from the first few seconds. You’re immediately caught up in the feel-good vibe that radiates from the track like steam on a hot side-walk. Before you know it, you’re strutting around like you own the streets with that bombastic hook of “Your firecracker burnt out/No you ain’t makin it out/Cuz you’ve been running your mouth/Your firecracker burnt out” bouncing around your head and falling off of your lips. You can’t help but sing along, dance a little, and just surrender to how infectious this brand of pop-rock really is.
When asked about the track, vocalist Bryan Shortell said: “It’s about feeling like your fire for something might be slowly fading out. It could be a passion, a relationship, etc. It’s that self-doubt that can come in waves and the whole thought process that goes along with that.”
You can stream “Firecracker” above. Northern Faces will be on tour throughout most of 2018. You can find a list of all upcoming tour dates below.
