Have you ever felt like you just didn’t have the will power to deal with life “when everything is going sour”? On “Randy, I Am The Liquor”, Free Throw vocalist / guitarist Cory Castro admits to being “drunk in my room, alone again” instead of going out in to the world and facing what’s truly frustrating him. But there is a moment of release, where at the end he decides, “Fuck this, I’m letting go.” If you enjoyed “Randy, I Am The Liquor” when it was first heard on Free Throw’s Bear Your Mind earlier this year, you’re in luck, as the band have now released an accompanying music video, which can be seen above.
In the video, we see a young male protagonist – dubbed “The Young One”- lay down on his bed and start listening to music. Castro himself plays “The Old One” and is seen drinking in a room full of red Solo cups and empty bottles. The Young One then meets “The Bad Influence” and begins falling victim to peer pressure. There’s a bit of humor to the video, as Castro is seen skipping hand-in-hand with a life-size liver, and it all culminates in Free Throw performing at a house party as Castro tries to fend off the bothersome liver.
Speaking to Alternative Press, Castro says, “Originally, we had an idea to do a kind of Dazed And Confused-style video. Turns out, it’s pretty hard to try and film a video that takes place in the ’70s when it’s 2017 and people are driving their newer cars through the shot… So the director, John Komar, suggested to go with a subtle feel and the flashback narrative. The video was shot entirely on 16mm film to give it that classic look.”
Released in May of 2017, Bear Your Mind is Free Throw’s Triple Crown Records debut, and if you enjoyed “Randy, I Am The Liquor”, we highly suggest listening to the album in full. Bear Your Mind is eleven tracks of blistering introspection where Castro dives in to his anxieties and inner struggles in a way that’s personal enough that you’ll know his story, while being open to interpretation for you to relate to it in your own way.
