Many of our readers may not old enough to remember the 1995 release of While You Were Sleeping, but those who do will recall the world falling in love with a fictional tale of romance and comas that felt utterly unique for its time. The Big Sick is similar in that it tells a tale of romance that involves a coma, but those are where the similarities end. This is a true story, brought to life by the couple who lived it, and it is one of our most anticipated films of summer 2017.

Today, the first trailer for The Big Sick debuted online. The two and a half minute clip introduces leads Kumail Nanjiani and Zoe Kazan, as well as the romance and its abrupt end. Not long after, Kazan’s character receives a medically induced coma in order to save her life. Nanjiani is the first to be called, and though he doesn’t completely seem to understand why he chooses to stay by his ex-girlfriend’s side, even after her family insists he can leave. The two sides soon find common ground, but the fate of Kazan’s character remains in the air.

The official synopsis reads:

Based on the real-life courtship between Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, The Big Sick tells the story of Pakistan-born aspiring comedian Kumail (Kumail Nanjiani), who connects with grad student Emily (Zoe Kazan) after one of his standup sets. However, what they thought would be just a one-night stand blossoms into the real thing, which complicates the life that is expected of Kumail by his traditional Muslim parents. When Emily is beset with a mystery illness, it forces Kumail to navigate the medical crisis with her parents, Beth and Terry (Holly Hunter and Ray Romano) who he’s never met, while dealing with the emotional tug-of-war between his family and his heart.
