Jimi Somewhere’s new EP, Ponyboy, has my attention. The electro-pop style reminisces of my days listening to bands like the Ready Set, and others. It’s not the same, it might be better.

Ponyboy feels personal and relatable. Thankfully, I had the chance to catch up with the singer/songwriter on the new EP, which is remarkable. I’ll include a link to listen below the interview.

Take me into the Ponyboy EP. Why did you choose that name for the album?

I feel very connected to both the character Ponyboy and the movie The Outsiders. The whole EP just felt like it could fit right in that movie. So it made sense.

Where did you get inspiration from for the album?

For this EP i was really inspired by the movie The Outsiders as well as a lot of meloncholy, guitar based music like American Pleasure Club and Phoebe Bridgers.

What was the biggest challenge you faced while recording Ponyboy?

Our microphone actually broke down while in LA. We didnt know why it just stopped working and our money were already lwo but eventually we were able to buy a new one. Other than that, we made the whole EP on just a Bose portable speaker and not being able to really hear the music loud is a struggle. But we made it work.

Was making the album cathartic for you?

Yea. Making music is always cathartic for me. Its a great feeling to be able to put your negative and strong emotions into a creation.

You released a spectacular music video/short film for “I Shot My Dog” / “1st Place”, what inspired that clip?

The fighting was inspired by just high school fights. Sometimes there would be people planning on fighting so everybody would just come watch. I wanted to make something that felt like that.

What are you most excited for in 2019?

Seeing how the world reacts to music!!
