Nashville’s Judah & The Lion are well on their way to turning 2019 into a banner year for them. Their January single “Over My Head” and its exhilarating music video both garnered praise and a bevy of streams. Today the band shared the news their next album–called Pep Talks–is releasing on May 3. To cap the news off, Judah & The Lion have also teamed up with reigning Album of The Year Grammy-winner Kacey Musgraves to drop “pictures,” their latest single.

“pictures” begins like a dirge. A deep humming instrumental creates a sound like a storm, and the lyrics back that up. Judah Akers is packing up a home, and the reason isn’t a good one. It seems a relationship has ended, and Akers reflects on the good times as he puts away the possessions that were special in said relationship. The title of “pictures” comes from the chorus of the track, as he laments removing the photographs of the happy couple. The sad, rattling strings really sell the mournful mood and regret of the lyrics. Musgraves sounds great on any track she appears on, and “pictures” is no exception. The sadness in her voice is perfect for the lyrics, and the harmonies between her and Akers are spectacular. Fans of either artist are going to be very pleased with this collaboration.

“pictures” is taken from Pep Talks, which will be released through Cletus the Van/Caroline. In a press release, Judah & The Lion stated pre-order information will come in the near future. In the meantime, stream “pictures” featuring Kacey Musgraves below.
