Members of By Surprise, Crucial Dudes, and It’s A King Thing have formed a new band: Cabana Wear.

Made up of longtime members of the New Jersey/Philadelphia punk and indie scene, newly-formed power-pop outfit Cabana Wear has been off to a solid start. Earlier this week we were given a peek of their new music through their first single “Bother You“, a two minute rush of fuzzed-out guitars and undeniable hooks that will almost certainly capture the attention of any fan of ’90s alternative. And today, they’re announcing a release date their upcoming self-titled debut album, Cabana Wear, due out March 15th via cassette label Sludge People.

This LP chronicles a particularly transitional time in lead singer Brian Mietz’s life—his relationship had just ended, he’d just quit his soul-crushing desk job—so naturally the lyrics deal with feeling directionless and . But, he approaches it with self-depreciation, warmth, and humor, unpacking the ups and downs of adulthood but never getting lost in self-pity. Lead single “Bother You” is the happier of the twelve, and is essentially a pep talk to remind himself to let go of the things he can’t control. In the 12-song LP, Mietz unpacks the ups and downs of life with wry* lyrical wit, winking at the absurdities of life and choosing to appreciate the smaller moments that can feel so big.

Cabana Wear’s music is invitingly familiar— as after all, they are influenced by a lot of ‘90s rock/power-pop (Teenage Fanclub, Nada Surf, Superdrag, The Rentals)— and is the kind of effortlessly catchy music that prove loud guitars and a colorful melodies never go out of style. You can preorder the album on cassette or on vinyl.
