Sometimes there are fun, interesting stories behind how bands get together. Let’s take Brooklyn, New York’s very own Stringer for example. Guitarist/vocalist Max Kagan met Mark Fletcher, Stringer’s other guitarist/vocalist, on 12/12/12 during a 24-hour long noise show at Shea Stadium. Shortly thereafter, they met up with drummer Johnny Spencer, and those three had collectively played shows together her since. However, it wasn’t until late 2015 that they met bassist Riley Zimmer, and thus, Stringer was born.
Over the years, the band has played shows with the likes of Speedy Ortiz, Slothrust, Titus Andronicus, So-So Glos, Porsches, and SWMRS, just to name a few. Now, the band is gearing up to release their new album, My Bad, this Friday, July 13th.
To celebrate the upcoming release, we are excited to partner with Stringer today to exclusively premiere a new song off of My Bad. The track is called “Through the Walls” and can be found at the top of this post. The song has a consistent beat throughout that is easy to follow and tap along to, which you’ll conveniently find yourself doing more than once. There’s a little bit of punk with a little bit of indie, combined to create this garage-rocky anthem that’s sure to make quite a first impression.
Further expanding on the song, Fletcher and Kagan state that “‘Through The Walls’ is about looking back at incidents that may have been tough to endure at the time, but with a smile. We sort of see this one as our ode to Weezer & the way they approached songwriting. Like many of their best songs, its about heartbreak, nostalgia, and how they intertwine. Here’s to hoping that when you listen to our song, you feel that same ‘heartbroken pop catharsis’ that Weezer was so good at expressing.”
As mentioned at the beginning of this post, Stringer does feature co-vocalists: Fletcher and Kagan. It’s also worth noting that with “Through the Walls,” Fletcher takes over as lead vocalist, in addition to guitar. This is also the case with two other tracks on My Bad (“Swimming” and “Flower Bomb”), but with the rest of the record, you will hear Kagan sing lead vocals.
Stringer will be releasing My Bad digitally this Friday, July 13th, via Wiretap Records. You can pre-order the digital release here, while the vinyl can be pre-ordered here ahead of it’s August 17th release.
