Earlier this month, post hardcore band Secrets released their song “3.17.16”, which explored the hardest parts of loss in an incredibly personal narrative by vocalist Richard Rogers about the loss of his sister. “3.17.16” followed “Incredible” and “Five Years” as the third song to be released from the band’s brand new self-titled record, Secrets, which we’re thrilled to be premiering today.

Lyrically, the rest of the album cuts just as deep, hitting themes like anger and abandonment,  but there is a spark of hope to be found, and a reminder that through our darkest times we can persevere: opening track “Sixteen” is “a celebration of separation”, where Rogers realizes he’s “better off on my own”, and “Lost Cause” sees the refrain, “My knees are weak but I’m still standing.”

Secrets comes as the follow-up to the band’s 2015 release, Everything That Got Us Here. It’s their first release on Made In The Shade Records, and while it keeps the themes of gritty instrumentals with a mix of clean and unclean vocals, the production quality has stepped up: drums hit harder and guitars swell and fill the room, meanwhile everything feels more melodic than before. It’s an album worth exploring and spending some time with; on first listen you’ll find catharsis in its aggressiveness, and after repeat plays you may find the lyrics speak to you in a way you didn’t even realize.
