It’s an exciting time for Jordan Rakei. His new album Wallflower is out next Friday, and every track we’ve heard from it so far has been excellent. What’s really been exciting about hearing the tracks and their remixes is just how many sounds Rakei utilizes, which serves to build anticipation for the full musical experience of Wallflower. This morning Rakei unveiled “Goodbyes,” and he has wowed once again.
“Goodbyes” starts with a little bit of orchestral music, and the listener thinks this might be a stirring, slow ballad. Before you know it a groovy drum kit kicks in alongside a piano and you have a funky jam on your hands. It’s unlike anything we’ve heard from the album yet, but still contains the keen musical sense that Rakei possesses.
On the subject matter of the track, Rakei said in a press release “‘Goodbyes’ is about totally investing your love and energy into someone in the early stages of a relationship, but those feelings might not be reciprocated.”
Wallflower will be released on September 22 through Ninja Tune. You can stream “Goodbyes” below.
