Michigan has long been home to notable rappers, and if you aren’t already a fan of rapper, singer, and songwriter NF (Nate Feuerstein), it’s time to get familiar. His 2016 sophomore album Therapy Session cuts deep into personal topics (the title track sees him connecting with fans who have taken solace in his music through their own struggles, and on “How Could You Leave Us” his voice cracks as he sings about losing his mother to an overdose), and it was also reached #1 on the Billboard Top Rap Albums Chart. Now, NF has announced that his third album, Perception, will be released on Friday, October 6 via Capitol Records.
So far, NF has released two new songs and music videos from Perception. “Outro” explores what it’s like gaining recognition for music created from a place of pain (“Pain’s always been the root of my music/ If I cut it off, how am I supposed to keep growing/ If I let it go, won’t my whole career be in ruins?”), while “Green Lights” sees him admit that while “last year I was in a bad place”, now everything’s a “green light” to go full-speed ahead on his musical career.
From the looks of these two tracks, Perception will be as vulnerable as Therapy Session, though this time with an even wider sense of self-awareness, and perhaps a spark of hope amidst the raw honesty. NF hasn’t announced any touring plans for the fall, but we’ll be sure to let you know when he does. When that time comes, don’t sleep on tickets: over forty dates were sold out on his previous North American tour earlier this year.
