Music festivals allow us to see some our favorite performers live in concert, but they also allow us to check out new genres of music and new artists in the genres we already love. The recent Billboard Hot 100 Festival in Wantagh, New York featured an impressive variety of current chart-toppers, and rap fans on Sunday, August 20 were treated to the likes of DJ Khaled, Lil Yachty, and plenty more.
When DJ Khaled finally took the Hot 100 Stage, it was almost half an hour after his scheduled time. When he did finally arrive, it was to a crowd chanting his name, and with his son, Asahd, in his arms. Asahd stayed on his shoulder for the first track “All I Do Is Win”, though spent the remainder of the set watching from the side of the stage. In recent years DJ Khaled has been known almost as much for his Snapchat persona as he is for his music, but that didn’t stop him from turning his live performance in to a full-on party.
Not long after DJ Khaled’s performance, Lil Yachty took to the Sun Stage. At 20 years old, he’s half DJ Khaled’s age, and his set was certainly geared towards the younger portion of the crowd. Songs like “Minnesota” saw him full of exuberant energy and plenty of laughter, and he encouraged the crowd- one of the largest of the day- to dance, always reminding them that he’s the one and only “Lil Boat.”
Lil Yachty fans, if you missed Billboard Hot 100 Festival, have no fear: Lil Boat himself is currently on tour, and he’ll be performing in cities across North America through the end of October. Head to his Facebook page for a full list of the upcoming shows.
