The man who gave us Requiem For A Dream and Black Swan is up to his unnerving tricks. No other filmmaker has the proven ability to leave us unsettled quite like Darren Aronofsky, and based on the official trailer his new film, Mother!, will be no exception.
Starring Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem, Mother! follows a couple whose relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their secluded home. That may sound simple. but the trailer above proves it is not. As tensions between the pair rise, Lawrence begins to uncover clues that lead her to believe there may be more unfolding at her house than she understands. She thinks her guests are strangers, but that might not be true.
The great thing about a trailer like this is that we, the audience, is able to watch the full clip without feeling as if we already know the entire story. Clearly there is more going on than a random knock at the front door, but what exactly could be happening? Is Bardem’s character part of a cult? Is Lawrence the ‘mother’ of the beast?
We have no questions, only answers, but hopefully that will change when Mother! opens nationwide on September 15. Stay tuned.
