Today, singer/songwriter Chris Farren has announced that he will be releasing his new album, Doom Singer, on August 4th via Polyvinyl. Pre-orders can be found here.

For the first time since he started releasing solo music, Farren has allowed himself to work with others on Doom Singer. The record was produced, engineered, and mixed by Jay Som — who also performs on the record — at her Atwater Village studio. Doom Singer was also written entirely with live drummer Frankie Impastato, and features Jeff Rosenstock on the occasional bass and saxophone.

Looking back on those [earlier] records… I have no good memories of making them,” Farren says of his previous solo output. “It’s always been a lonely, doubt-ridden process.”

To celebrate the album announcement as well, Farren has released the album’s lead single, “Cosmic Leash” — which comes alongside a music video. Leaving behind the anxiety that caused him to agonize over every minute detail of his past work, Farren “wanted to open these songs up, make them less frenetic, and not feel the pressure to cram every moment,” he explains. Further explaining  the meaning behind the single, Farren says“‘Cosmic Leash’ is about fighting the urge to romanticize the past but inevitably succumbing to the sentimental rot of nostalgia. Also, the song kicks ass.”
