David Hasley, the 23-year-old Bay area artist, better known as Petticoat, has released his new single, “The Middle.”

His sound is a delightful melding of 80s new wave, experimental club music, and bubblegum bass that explores themes such as gender expression and the 21st-century condition.

“I love the music from eras that have had an eye towards futurism,” Halsey says. “Things like 2000s RnB and modern club/pop music.”

Last year, Halsey released his debut EP “InFormat,” a collection of songs that explored the impact of technology or modern connection. Some parts echo algorithmic structure while others are distinctly human.

“The Middle” is a look into the future of Petticoat. Anchored by marimba rhythms, cosmic synths, and a steady four-on-the-floor beat, this song feels warm and vintage. Halsey’s passionate vocals add a layer of euphoria to this piece of pop fantasy.

“‘The Middle’ is a direct inspiration from 80’s New Wave that I grew up on,” Halsey shares. “I was listening to a lot of Bananarama and Thompson Twins making this track. The song is a simple ‘break-free’ type song about leaving a hometown situation. The song is sprinkled with events and places that transpired when I was 18, all based around my home with my brother and father.”

Growing up with a diverse taste in music, from his parents listening to Madonna and his brothers introducing him to the Bay Area hip-hop scene, these influences manifest together to form Petticoat.

“It’s a reflection of my expression, identity, and views in modern music.”
