The Drums

Metro // Chicago, IL // May 1, 2019

The kings of indie pop sold out one of the most iconic venues in Chicago, and for good reason.

When I first heard The Drums, I thought “this is some of the best Brit pop I’ve heard in a long time!” The twist? They’re American. The band, founded and fronted by Jonny Pierce, formed in New York City in 2008. All of the founding members except Jonny have since moved on (with no hard feelings between members). Since then, Pierce has become the face and sole writer of the band’s music. With the release of their fifth album, Brutalism, The Drums have firmly cemented their place in indie pop and continue to gain more and more fans as they tour.

For their sold out Chicago show, Pierce and company pulled out all the stops. They started the night with “Days”, a fan favorite from their 2011 album Portamento. Pierce’s mannerisms onstage are a combo of Mick Jagger and Dave Grohl. He gets into the crowd’s face and sings along while freely dancing across the stage.During “Best Friend”, he sashayed from one side to the other, occasionally holding out the mic for fans to sing along. He held the mic like it was made of the most fragile materials, delicately placing it in one hand and holding the cord with the other. His movements were an interesting opposition to the fast-paced beat and bouncy rhythm.

The Drums’ fans seemed elated to be at this show. This may feel like an obvious statement, but I’ve definitely been to shows with low energy and less than enthusiastic concert goers. More than once I heard “I love you!” from somewhere in the Metro. With each song came a new eruption of cheers and screams, giving Pierce a new burst of energy. For the final song of the night, The Drums played “Blood Under My Belt”, a surf-rock tune that’s resonated with fans since its creation. It’s even been covered by rapper/MC Kyle who put his own spin on the track. The brutally honest and somewhat hopeful lyrics really showcase Pierce’s writing, and he put every last ounce of power and energy into the performance. Fans left the show feeling energized and singing their favorite songs from the night.
