CHVRCHES

Aragon Ballroom // Chicago, IL // May 2, 2019

CHVRCHES and dancing your butt off are a perfect combo.

I haven’t seen CHVRCHES in over 3 years, yet I was just as anxious for this show as I was for the last one. The electropop trio from Scotland easily sold out the Aragaon, a 5000+ capacity venue here in Chicago, yet it felt like twice as many people were screaming for their favorite songs. Since the release of their 2018 album Love is Dead, CHVRCHES have been touring almost nonstop, playing some of the biggest festivals and venues across the globe. The leadup to their Chicago show was super chaotic, but not through any fault of their own. Across the street, another sold out show at The Riv was gearing up to start. Over 7,000 people looking for parking and pulling up in Ubers? The streets were packed. The line for the Aragaon wrapped around the block only minutes before their show started.

Once inside, fans ran as quickly as they could to the front of the stage and eagerly awaited for Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook, and Martin Doherty to join them. Before CHVRCHES came on, L.A. rockers Cherry Glazerr played a fast-paced and raw set. Vocalist and guitarist Clementine Creevy gave off serious Kathleen Hanna vibes, shredding and sweating with abandon. The band recently released their third studio album, Stuffed & Ready, to rave reviews. It’s no surprise they were asked to join CHVRCHES on tour; their energies compliment one another so well.

By the time the stage went dark for CHVRCHES, fans were ready to dance. Mayberry strode onstage in a hot pink tulle dress, black tights, and shiny black combat boots. She wore neon blue eyeliner that you could still make out in the back row. They started their set with “Get Out”, a track from Love is Dead. Fans instantly recognized the music before Mayberry started singing and started jumping up and down. During instrumentals, she would twirl back and forth or stylishly bang her head, making for breathtaking photos. Unfortunately, photographers were not allowed to stay for the remainder of the show after we took our photos, but from what I saw from fans’ videos, it was an incredible and high-energy show.
