Aragon Ballroom // Chicago, IL // March 6, 2019
Robyn turned the Aragon into a 5,000 person dance floor.
When people go to a concert, they usually dress the part. For a rock show, people are decked out in band t’s and black shirts. For a punk show, you can see plaid for miles. For Robyn’s sold out show at the Aragon, the outfits ranged from a little bit of glitter and lipstick to full-blown neon costumes. Everyone looked fabulous for Robyn, and as we waited for her to come onstage, I was enamored with her stage setup. Big, billowing white curtains made the room look like it was covered in clouds, while a massive statue made up of hands stood at the back of the stage. When the lights went down, the lights danced across the curtains and created a water ripple effect. As the throngs of fans screamed at the top of their lungs, Robyn slowly and gracefully waltzed onstage and simply stood and looked at the crowd.
As a photographer, it’s clear that Robyn loves her fans. She didn’t stop smiling throughout the entire show, and she allowed photographers to stay in the pit for 4 songs and the introduction (we got to shoot her for over 30 minutes, which is basically unprecedented). In addition, she made eye contact with me several times, and it was clear it wasn’t an accident. Robyn’s been making music for over 2 decades, and she keeps putting out hit after hit. While we were in the pit, she sang “Hang With Me”, one of her biggest singles and a certifiable banger. The soft purple and pink lighting made the audience look like cotton candy, and Robyn had a huge grin on her face the whole time.
There are very few musicians who make pop music seem effortless. Robyn is one of those musicians. It takes a lot to have a glowing appearance, perfectly choreographed moves, and a flawless live singing voice, all while touring the country to perform in front of hundreds of thousands of fans. As she approaches 40, Robyn shows no signs of slowing down, and we should all be super happy about that. No doubt she’ll be making us dance well into the next decade.
Robyn is currently on tour in Europe, but she will be back in Chicago for Pitchfork in July. Get tickets for her upcoming shows HERE.
