Brooklyn’s lo-fi artist pronoun is back with ‘stay’, a catchy new single off her just-announced forthcoming record, ‘i’ll show you stronger’, out May 24 via Rhyme and Reason Records.
“This song started out as a love song, but I threw it away when I started writing ‘There’s no one new around you.,'” pronoun says of the single. “It basically walks through the moment that a break up occurs: staring at the ceiling, pacing around the room, hearing the clocks count the seconds, the only thing that reminds you time isn’t standing still. In this case, it was something I was expecting, and had already began to process but still in that moment found myself in the strange mixture of an array of emotions but also lack thereof and apathy.”
If you haven’t heard of pronoun, you’re certainly missing out. Her debut EP, ‘There’s no one new around you.’ (an ode to the Tinder message you get when you’ve run out of just that, anyone new) was released in 2016, and is a collection of four tracks that toe the delicate balance between over-produced synths and quiet vocals. This release is quite consistent with everything on that EP, blending dreamy, synth-style guitars and poppy backbeats with dramatic, relatable lyrics that stick with you even after you’ve turned it off.
Having just come off a stateside tour with Justin Courtney Pierre (of the late Motion City Soundtrack), pronoun prepares to hit the road again, spending the rest of February in the UK with rock-veterans Mayday Parade, Movements, and The Wonder Years (dates below, tickets here). Her debut album, ‘i’ll show you stronger’ is due out May 24, and we can only imagine that it’ll be as catchy as this.
“[stay] is the best track to release in conjunction with the announcement of my first album… [which] picks up where my first EP left off. It pretty much saved my life, helped me realize it’s ok to be sad, and crazy, and hurt, and vulnerable, but it’s just as important to stand up for yourself and know what you deserve, and lastly to move on. It’s been three years in the making, and I’m so proud … it’s finally finished.”
