Just last month, The Wonder Years announced their new album, Sister Cities, and welcomed us to this era of the band with the title-track. Now, the band has returned with a new song called “Pyramids of Salt” that showcases their ability to transcend their own sound.

The opening verse of the song finds the band channeling inspiration from acts like Death Cab for Cutie and even vocalist Dan Campbell’s side project, Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties. However, the rest of the Wonder Years show up for the chorus and the band closes out the last minute of the song as strong as ever.

“‘Pyramids of Salt’ is a song about knowing there’s nothing you can do,” Campbell told Billboard, “it centers around the universal feeling of being powerless, of knowing that no matter how much you love someone, that a day is going to come where you can’t heal them, where you can’t keep them safe.”

The Wonder Years will be heading out on a headlining tour later this year to support Sister Cities — due out April 6 via Hopeless Records — with support coming from Tigers Jaw, Tiny Moving Parts and Worriers.
