Dennis Villeneuve and Emily Blunt may not be involved, but Sicario 2 is already showing a lot of great potential.

With just days left in 2017 the studio execs of Hollywood are itching to get moviegoers excited for the titles they plan to roll out in the new year. The latest of these is Sicario 2: Soldado, which finds two-thirds of the first film’s cast returning for a completely different story that looks far removed from what viewers may expect. You can view the film’s first trailer above.

Starring Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro, Sicario 2 finds these men reuniting to stop a dangerous group that is suspected of bringing terrorists into the United States from Mexico. Brolin is tasked with eradicating the threat, but he cannot do so without unleashing the unpredictable and extremely violent character played by Del Toro. Will their efforts prove successful, or is there something more happening below the surface? We won’t find out until summer 2018.

The official synopsis for Sicario 2: Soldado reads:

FBI agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) teams up with a former member of a Mexican drug cartel (Benicio Del Toro) to kidnap a kingpin’s daughter.

As mentioned above, Sicario star Emily Blunt is not involved in this feature. Those who saw that film will recall seeing her character walk away from the job before the credits rolled. This decision made sense at the time, as her character’s journey had revealed the questionable things the US government will under the guise of protecting its citizens. Sicario 2 seems to lack a character like this, and one has to wonder how that missing piece will impact viewers’ ability to connect with the story.
