Star Wars: The Last Jedi is one of the most anticipated films of the year. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, as The Force Awakens and Rogue One have helped Star Wars reclaim its throne in the pop culture zeitgeist. The Last Jedi is only a short two months away, so excitement is building to its peak level. To help boost that excitement, a new trailer for the franchise’s eighth main entry dropped tonight during ESPN’s Monday Night Football broadcast. It’s now online, and director Rian Johnson was right: this trailer is incredible.

The trailer juxtaposes the training of Rey and Kylo Ren, the former with Luke Skywalker and the latter with Supreme Leader Snoke. It seems that both are incredibly powerful, but both face doubts. Rey still doesn’t know where she fits into the Force, and Kylo is still struggling with his past, as shown when he hesitates during an attack on a Resistance ship containing his mother, Leia (the late Carrie Fisher). Besides the main plot points there are loads of gorgeous action sequences on display, including an epic duel between Finn (John Boyega) and Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie). The ending of the trailer is especially intriguing, reinforcing that the relationship and parallels between Rey and Kylo Ren will be key to the story.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be in theaters on December 15. You can watch the new trailer above and check out the latest poster at the end of the post. After The Last Jedi, Star Wars fans will have the Han Solo film in 2018 and the J.J. Abrams-helmed Episode IX in 2019 to look forward to.
