The Force Awakens once more as J.J. Abrams returns to Star Wars franchise.
The house Mickey Mouse built broke some major news this morning regarding the future of the Star Wars franchise. Filmmaker J.J. Abrams, who just two years ago delivered The Force Awakens, is officially replacing Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) as the writer and director of Star Wars: Episode IX.
“With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy,” said Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy.
The news of Abrams’ decision to return to the Star Wars franchise is not exactly shocking, but it is a bit of surprise. Many thought the exit of Trevorrow provided the studio with a chance to show more diversity in who they trust to steer this iconic brand, perhaps making room for a woman and/or person of color to take the reigns. Selecting Abrams is the safest of safe bets, which is by no means a bad thing, but it may frustrate those who continue to ask why a series exploring the galaxies far, far away seems to only be entrusted to straight white men.
We have a lot of Star Wars to sit through before Episode IX arrives sometimes around 2019. Ahead of that release we have The Last Jedi, which arrives in December, as well as the 2018 debut of the (soon to be its on franchise I’m sure) Han Solo solo film.
