Long live the king.

Marvel Studios has released the official trailer for Black Panther, the first MCU film scheduled to be released in 2018. The newly shared footage reveals the secrets of the title character’s technological utopia, Wakanda, as well as the brewing tension among those who call it home. You can watch the visuals above.

According to a press release, the official synopsis for Black Panther is as follows:

Marvel Studios’ Black Panther follows T’Challa who, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king. But when a powerful old enemy reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king—and Black Panther—is tested when he is drawn into a formidable conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people and their way of life.

Seeing a Marvel movie with an unbelievable cast of A-list talent wearing spandex and standing in front of giant green screens is certainly nothing new, but the African setting allows this movie to immediately stand apart. You have never seen a vision like this in the MCU, which makes it hard to know just what to expect from the film itself. We know the plot, or enough of it to have us interested, but still there is an intangible element of unpredictability that has us salivating at the thought of what else may lie in store. Black Panther opens February 16. Check out a new poster, which was also released today, below:
