No one asked for The Conjuring to launch an extended horror universe, but it exists and we are already in the thick of it. With two Conjuring titles and one Annabelle solo film already out in the wild, the interconnected franchise of terror grows even further this August with the release of Annabelle: Creation, and this morning we got a new look at the upcoming feature.

Telling us the origin story of the doll that has terrified audiences for the half a decade already, Annabelle: Creation takes viewers into the lives of a couple who made a grave mistake. In the wake of their young daughter’s death the grieving pair agree to let a visiting spirit they believe to be their dead child inhabit the body of a doll. The spirit is something else entirely however, and the couple soon finds themselves at odd with an evil they have never known before.

The new trailer for Creation shows us a lot of this, as well as several teases of the film’s numerous scares. There’s a fantastic bit involving a well that somehow manages to make a deep dark hole scary in a way the does not duplicate scares found in The Ring franchise. There’s also a bit about claws under floorboards that has us wondering whether or not the next spinoff of The Conjuring cinematic universe might be revealed in this film.

A synopsis included with the new trailer for Creation reads:

Several years after the tragic death of their little girl, a dollmaker and his wife welcome a nun and several girls from a shuttered orphanage into their home, soon becoming the target of the dollmaker’s possessed creation, Annabelle.
