This shouldn’t come as news, but World War II was one of the darkest periods in human history. The millions of Jewish lives lost in the Holocaust, the death and destruction on the front lines, and the only use thus far of nuclear weaponry combined for a horrific few years. Many aspects of the war have already been covered numerous times in television series and documentaries, but seldom have the people who covered the war while it was happening have been mentioned. That’s set to change with the release of the Netflix documentary Five Came Back.
The documentary is based on the 2014 non-fiction book of the same name by author and excellent Twitter follow Mark Harris. The film will cover the titular five directors from the war: Frank Capra, John Huston, John Ford, George Stevens, and William Wyler. The trailer shows us the five legendary contemporary filmmakers covering these stories: Francis Ford Coppola, Guillermo Del Toro, Paul Greengrass, Lawrence Kasdan, and Steven Speilberg. The whole thing is narrated by Meryl Streep and looks to be a deeply affecting tale of filmmaking and humanity. Watch the trailer:
Goosebumps, right? Five Came Back will be streaming on Netflix starting on March 31.
