If you’re even passingly familiar with Japanese pop culture, you’ve probably heard of Death Note. From the original manga to the anime series to the Japanese live-action movies all the way down to the video games, it’s an excellent series. The series centers around the titular Death Note, a book that kills anyone whose name is written in it. You’ll have another chance to be introduced to this story when the American film version comes to Netflix this fall, with the first teaser landing today.
We see Nat Wolff as Light Turner (Light Yagami in the original) find the book as it drops from the sky. Of course, using the Death Note will have consequences, as can be seen when the police begin to chase Light. What we don’t see is creepy and iconic shinigami Ryuk, but we do hear his equally creepy voice provided by Willem Dafoe. We also don’t see Lakeith Stanfield (Atlanta) as L yet. Here’s the teaser:
The film was directed by modern master of horror Adam Wingard. Death Note comes to Netflix on August 25. The anime version is on the site right now, and we can’t recommend it enough.
