The winter time is typically seen as a slow time for live music. A time when musicians and concertgoers alike seek out warm shelter to hibernate and build up for a warm weather release. However, on a unusually warm February night R&B singer Tinashe, brought her own kind of warm weather release to the concrete jungle. On February 9th, the singer arrived at New York’s Terminal 5 venue to put on a sold out performance in support of her latest album BB/ANG3L .

The entry line stretch all the way down 56th street, turning the corner onto 12th avenue, but the vibes were high. A food truck accompanied fans in line, keeping them stocked with water and food and playing some of Tinashe’s top hits, as fans waited for doors to open. At 8pm, the venue flooded with fans who traversed all three levels of Terminal 5, all vying for the best spot available.

Kicking off the evenings festivities was near-hometown favorite, the self-dubbed “Jersey Club Queen” and DJ, Uniqu3. Her effervescent personality was palpable from the get-go. She approached the deck in center stage and began her performance. After a couple of minutes, she was joined on stage but a handful of dancers and together they began to rip into a stellar performance that consisted of in-sync dance moves and club music bops. It was truly the perfect way to get the crowd on their feet and pumped up for Tinashe’s headlining performance.

Wasting no time between sets, a countdown clock appeared on the backdrop on stage. T-minus 15 minutes until show time and a giant LED box was rolled onto the stage. As the clock struck 9pm and the timer on the stage ran out, the lights went black and a video montage of Tinashe played on the screen.

Beginning her lengthy 26 song setlist with the ballad “Treason”, Tinashe appeared atop the giant LED box in center stage. The fans were with her from the first second — shouting all the lyrics right back at her, louder that she was herself! After descending the box, Tinashe was accompanied by her four dancers and ripped into “X”, serving all of us with powerful and strong dance moves to accompany the stellar vocals.

Tinashe commanded the attention and energy of every single person inside Terminal 5 on that evening. She offers fans a true, unmatched talent, of amazing dance skills and killer vocals — a pairing that is so often sought out but rarely achieved successfully. The passion for her craft and her art shines through in every moment, as Tinashe donned an unwavering smile throughout the entire performance.

Waving to the crowd on all three levels of the venue and cupping her hands into a heart shape over her chest, Tinashe thanked her fans for being in attendance and supporting her in her musical journey. A raw, talented soul Tinashe is and I truly cannot wait to watch her as she continues ascending on the ladder of success.
