Vanessa Carlton has always been an artist unafraid to push boundaries with her sophisticated and memorable melodies, and those characteristics have only evolved since we first heard from the singer.

Announced earlier today, the singer (who you may recognize from her debut 2002 track “A Thousand Miles”) is gearing up to release her sixth studio album in the Spring of next year, Love Is An Art.

The forthcoming release is following the singer’s previous album, 2015’s Liberman, an album in which she began to embrace a more introspective and simplistic approach to her music. And that evolution that she first introduced back in 2015 is now as present as ever with our first taste of the new album with her haunting track, “Future Pain.”

According to the song’s description on Youtube, the singer describes the song as “repeating a pattern we know has the same unhappy ending and finding comfort in a pattern that is self-destructive. Choosing dark over light. There is darkness in all of us. When and why do we let it win?”
