There are songs out there that have the power to stop you in your tracks. Whatever you’re doing when you start to listen completely disappears as the power of the music hits you. It might be the music itself, the message therein, or a combination of the two. I hope you’re ready to devote a few minutes to such a powerful track this morning, because UK-songwriter Lauren Aquilina has released an absolute masterpiece with her new single “Tobacco In My Sheets.”

Aquilina addresses “Tobacco In My Sheets” to her mother, and she lays out the entire truth. It seems she’s recently experienced a breakup, and she’s taking it pretty hard. Through the lyrics we discover Aquilina’s mother went through a similar situation, and Aquilina is now reaching out for support. Touching on the title of the track, she reveals in the chorus she’s taken to drugs and alcohol to cope, and the way she delivers these words plainly and honestly is truly affecting. When she asks her mother for understanding and compassion to help get her through the situation, it’ll break your heart. “Tobacco In My Sheets” is set to a beautiful piano played by Aquilina and just the slighest hints of some extra production. It’s never overwhelming, as the focus rightfully stays on her deeply personal lyrics.

If you’re ready to have a lot of emotions this morning, listen to “Tobacco In My Sheets” below. Aquilina is currently on tour with Sasha Sloan before a few stops of her own, and you can find those dates after the jump as well.
