The old Taylor Swift is dead. And if that wasn’t already evident from the pop superstar’s declaration of “The old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now / Why? Oh, ’cause she’s dead!” in the bridge of her new song, “Look What You Made Me Do,” the music video will surely convince you.
The video, which premiered Sunday night at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards, pokes fun at all of Swift’s past music videos and just her life decisions in general (dancers don “I Love TS” shirts, likely an homage to a similar shirt her ex Tom Hiddleston wore in 2016). From the start, we see Swift rising from the grave covered in dirt under a marker reading, “Here Lies Taylor Swift’s Reputation,” and it just gets weirder from there. There’s a scene of Swift sitting in a bathtub filled with jewels, Swift sitting on a throne surrounded by snakes, and probably the most interesting, the new version of Swift uplifted on a pedestal while all of her past selves fight each other to reach her.
It’s an interesting video, but above all, Swift makes the statement that she isn’t the cookie-cutter pop star everyone has made her out to be for years. She’s back with a vengeance, and we can’t wait to see what the rest of her new album, Reputation (out November 10), holds.
