“Get up and open your eyes. The world is filled with things to see.”

There are countless science fiction films that open by describing a future where overpopulation has become mankind’s biggest problem. Most of these films find a solution through either killing a large amount of people or by simply limiting the amount of people that can be born, but what if there were a third option? What if, instead of making less people, we just made people smaller?

Arriving in theaters this December, Alexander Payne’s Downsizing will make this wild idea a possibility. The plot reads:

“When scientists discover how to shrink humans to five inches tall as a solution to over-population, Paul (Matt Damon) and his wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) decide to abandon their stressed lives in order to get small and move to a new downsized community — a choice that triggers life-changing adventures.”

The first teaser for Downsizing arrived online early this morning, August 29. The clip does not showcase the world of tiny people, but it does appear to tease the program used to shrink human beings. We are also introduced to the film’s cast, with special attention paid to Matt Damon and Christoph Waltz. You can view the footage above.

There isn’t much to go on from this trailer alone, but it does appear that the film will have a fairly serious tone. That said, we certainly wouldn’t oppose an updated take on Honey I Shrunk The Kids (even if Matt Damon lacks the charm of Rick Moranis).

A full size trailer (get it?) for Downsizing will arrive online September 12. It will be interesting to see whether or not Paramount chooses to reveal the world of shrunken people this far out from release. They could keep such scenes under wraps for a few months, and part of me thinks they would be smart to do so. Comment below and let us know if you agree.
