We know it doesn’t feel like it all across the United States just yet, but summer is right around the corner. Every summer season has one song that comes along an becomes an international ear worm, infecting the masses over the course of 12-16 weeks before staying atop the charts long enough for people to hate it. Only a few songs accomplish this feat of popularity every year, half a dozen at best. If any pop song released thus far in 2017 deserves that honor, aside from “Sign of the Times” (duh) it must be “First Time” from Kygo and Ellie Goulding.

Finding inspiration in the same pop culture referencing nostalgia that fueled The Chainsmokers‘ inescapable smash “Closer” in 2016, “First Time” is a midtempo pop song that longs for a simpler time. A time when you listened to Andre 3000 while pretending your dad’s car was actually a Maybach. A time when $10 felt like a key to limitless possibilities and cigarettes were kind of cool for some dumb reason. You know, generic coming of age ‘teen things’ we all kind of relate to whether or not we actually did it.

I’m not going to lie, my initial listening experience was akin to having my sins cleansed. “First Time” is essentially the music equivalent to the party drugs people take at festivals where this brand of music is performed, and with the right push it will be in heavy rotation all summer long. Resistance is futile, so you might learn the words, construct your flower crown (or make some you can sell to fund your overpriced festival drinks) and prepare to celebrate the coming season with this single as your soundtrack.

Speaking of summer and concerts, Kygo has numerous appearances in Las Vegas scheduled for the weeks ahead. Visit his official website for more information.
