If there’s any song that’s taken the music industry by storm this year, it’s Post Malone and 21 Savage‘s “rockstar.” Following its release in September, “rockstar” became both artists’ first chart-topper as it reached Number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100, where it stayed for several weeks; it also topped the charts abroad, reaching Number 1 in several other countries including Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Although there was controversy surrounding the song’s climb to the top of charts (Republic Records’ original “official upload” of the song on YouTube was the chorus played on loop; fans had to click a link in the video description to hear the full song, but both chorus streams on YouTube and full-track streams elsewhere counted towards the song’s chart placement), there’s no denying millions of listeners worldwide are hooked.
Now- just over two months since the song’s release- Post Malone and 21 Savage have shared the official music video for “rockstar”, which can be seen above. The video is preceded with a viewer discretion advisory against graphic violence, and with reason, as things get explicit. Post is seen sitting on a throne, dressed head-to-toe in red with a fur coat draped over his shoulders, as a snake slithers around his foot. Meanwhile in other scenes he’s dressed in white, leading a group of individuals who pull swords against a group of men dressed in suits. While there’s a hazy, dream-like quality to the visuals, the action is anything but, as everyone is seen in a full-on sword fight. 21 Savage makes an appearance in a separate scene, as he’s alone in a room for the duration of his feature. The “rockstar” video is not for the faint of heart, but the clip is worth your viewing time.
