December has been riddled with trailers for upcoming 2017 blockbusters. So many, in fact, that we almost forgot one of the best storytellers of the modern age also had a new movie on the way.
Christopher Nolan‘s Dunkirk is the latest cinematic vision of World War II heroism. If it were anyone else we would probably make some stupid comment about there being more than enough movies about that battle, but when the visionary behind Inception and The Dark Knight trilogy wants to show you something you sit down, shut up, and thank him for the opportunity. Check out the new trailer below:
The official synopsis for Dunkirk reads:
Miraculous evacuation of Allied soldiers from Belgium, Britain and France, who were cut off and surrounded by the German army from the beaches and harbor of Dunkirk, France, between May 27- June 04, 1940, during Battle of France in World War II.
There is a lot of imagery to take in, but a few things should be pointed out:
- Harry Styles blends into this world very well. Could he be the first former boy band member to launch a successful movie career since Donnie Wahlberg became that detective who (spoiler alert) died at the end of Saw IV?
- Tom Hardy looks like his typical bad-ass self only this time he’s killing people from the sky.
- The cinematography is gorgeous. This should be expected considering this is a Nolan movie, but still… Wow.
The footage above is actually the second teaser we have seen for Dunkirk. In case you forgot its chilling predecessor we’ve included the clip below:
If you need even more insight into Dunkirk you can visit your local library or support one of the many great authors who have covered the evacuation at length in books (there’s even a children’s book). The story is amazing, and it’s worth getting to know in detail.
Dunkirk opens everywhere July 21, 2017.
