Pixar has a pretty solid track record (pun intended) of putting out some high quality films. Part of what makes Pixar’s offerings so good is that they combine bright animation and simple jokes for children with heavier themes and ideas that resonant with audiences of all ages. It’s the latter aspect that surprisingly gets played up in the new teaser for Cars 3.
The trailer doesn’t show much in its 50-second runtime, but it seems the Cars franchise is moving into more serious territory. There’s a race going on, and protagonist
Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) is seriously struggling. It appears the other cars have passed him by technologically as they begin to pass him physically. The trailer ends with McQueen in a fiery wreck, with a promise that things have changed. It’s a remarkably dark notion to emphasize in the first teaser, but we’re hoping that our buddy Lightning gets better.
Cars 3 is being directed by Brian Fee, who worked as an artist on the first two films in the franchise. The movie is driving into theaters on June 17, 2017, and you can watch the teaser below.
