A Series Of Unfortunate Events was my literary jam when I was a kid. I remember eagerly anticipating each of Lemony Snicket’s (pen name of Daniel Handler) new dismal adventures. I also remember being slightly underwhelmed by the 2004 movie with Jim Carrey, but even more disappointed that there were no sequels to tell the rest of the story. It seems I, and many others, are about to get their wish, though, as Netflix released a teaser for the A Series Of Unfortunate Events series.
The teaser is just a minute long, but it absolutely nails the feel of the books. Even in scenes where the primary color scheme isn’t gray, everything looks dark and dismal. Readers of the books know that’s a perfect fit for the adventures of the Baudelaire children. The big payoff for this teaser—which you can watch down below—is seeing beloved actor Neil Patrick Harris as the villainous and creepy Count Olaf, and does the teaser ever deliver. Harris looks about as close to the illustrations in the books as one could get, and gives off the vibe of a villain that can truly carry a television show.
A Series Of Unfortunate Events arrives on Netflix on January 13, 2017. The series also stars Malina Weissman, Louis Hynes, and Patrick Warburton as Lemony Snicket.
