First ‘Passengers’ trailer leaves us with a lot of questions

Aside from Rogue One, which is without question the most anticipated movie yet to be released this year, it’s likely that Passengers will be one of the biggest films to be released in the second half of 2016. Starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt as the only two people awake on a space ship that is almost a century from its destination, the big budget space romance has been the talk of Hollywood for the better part of the year. Now with the first trailer finally being made available online, it’s time for audiences to see just what happens when two of the biggest names in film today fall in love on screen.

Edited in such a way that understanding the plot in its entirety feels impossible, the first trailer for Passengers promises gorgeous visuals and a steamy romance between two of the world’s most beloved silver screen stars. Pratt and Lawrence are part of a group that was supposed to hibernate while traveling one-hundred years to mankind’s new home, but due to some unknown error they were awaken just 10 years into their journey. With no one to call for help and no chance of surviving the duration of the flight, the pair is left to figure out what they can do with the time they have left. Check it out:

Even after three views of the footage above we are left with more questions than answers, including:

  • Why did their hibernation pods malfunction?
  • What is up with the visual reference to The Shining during that bar scene?

  • Why does the power go out?

  • Why don’t these two immediately fall in love after realizing they are the only two people awake for tens, if not hundreds of thousands of miles?

  • How is Andy Garcia involved?

  • How is Laurence Fishburne involved?

  • What happened to life on Earth?

  • What does the new planet/home they’re traveling to look like?

  • Is everyone on Earth on this ship, or just a few?

  • Is it possible to return to hibernation, or are these two destined to die in deep space, possibly decades before anyone finds their bodies?

The official synopsis of Passengers is as follows:

Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt are two passengers onboard a spaceship transporting them to a new life on another planet. The trip takes a deadly turn when their hibernation pods mysteriously wake them 90 years before they reach their destination. As Jim and Aurora try to unravel the mystery behind the malfunction, they begin to fall for each other, unable to deny their intense attraction… only to be threatened by the imminent collapse of the ship and the discovery of the truth behind why they woke up.

We have high hopes for this movie, and we imagine many of you will as well. Passengers opens nationwide on December 21.
