Virginia’s Sunndrug—featuring former members of Norma Jean and Spitfire—will release their full-length debut, titled Exit Wounds, this fall through Mind Over Matter Records. Today, we have the privilege of premiering a new single from the effort for your enjoyment.
“Shining” comes across like some kind of wondrous concoction created from the best elements of O’Brother, Arctic Monkeys, Trophy Scars, and Portugal. The Man, with some original, nuanced flair thrown in for the perfect consistency and texture. The track builds and builds over the course of nearly five minutes, with soul, bluesy grooves, and an almost eerie atmosphere of post-rock influence and ethereal vibes. Don’t miss out; give it a go below.
“‘Shining’ was the last song we wrote before starting to record the album,” says vocalist Jimmy Reeves. “Its working title was ‘Bonham Song’ because the sonic inspiration for it came from the way Led Zeppelin played the blues. It’s a jilted love story based around the setting of a well-curated online life being a mirage for a person whose reality doesn’t live up to it. The end of the song is a moment on the record I’m particularly proud of because I think the music evokes something even without lyrics.”
Exit Wounds is not yet available for pre-order but will be digitally and on vinyl and cassette at Mind Over Matter, so keep checking in.
