In case you haven’t heard, we’ll get right to it: KT Tunstall has a new album coming out. The album, KIN, is Tunstall’s first album since 2013, and we are incredibly stoked to hear new music from the Scottish songwriter. Thankfully we have a new song and music video to jam to while we wait for KIN, as Tunstall premiered “Maybe It’s A Good Thing” through EW yesterday.
The new song is a ton of fun, with Tunstall’s writing dazzling against the acoustic pop backing. “Maybe that’s a good thing / that I can’t see what’s coming and I don’t much care,” Tunstall sings on the hook, and the rest of the song resolves around this theme of cautious optimism. “The truth is, I’ve finally made peace with being a pop songwriter. This record was very much embracing my dharma as an artist, which is to write positive songs that have muscle, but also show their vulnerability,” Tunstall told EW.
The video for the song is also great, and is one of our favorite music videos so far this year. Directed by Yoni Weisberg, the video finds Tunstall dancing in front of a wide collection of backgrounds that become progressively more colorful and animated as the song moves along. It’s executed perfectly; we’ve been watching it all afternoon.
KIN is out on September 9 through Caroline Records, and pre-orders are ongoing. In the meantime, do yourself a favor and enjoy the video for “Maybe It’s A Good Thing.”
