Star Wars Celebration Europe kicked off today in London, and there’s a lot to unpack from it. With Rogue One: A Star Wars Story headed our way in December, we’re obviously itching for any new peeks at the movie. Thankfully, SWCE delivered with a super-cool behind-the-scenes look at the filming of the movie, and it has us even more excited than we already were for Rogue One.
There’s a lot to absorb from the footage we see. There are multiple soundbites from director Gareth Edwards on the filming process and the feeling that accompanies getting to make a Star Wars movie, which Edwards understandably finds exhilarating. What immediately stands out is how much of Rogue One appears to be filmed on location using practical effects instead of using a green screen. To illustrate this, we see a lot of different things explode in rather spectacular fashion. Felicity Jones also chimes in on how practical effects help actors really capture something special. In addition, the footage ends with Jones’ character Jyn Erso delivering a classic Star Wars line. You can check out the full footage at the end of the post.
The Star Wars Twitter account also unveiled a new poster for the film. As the film takes place before Episode IV: A New Hope the focus is clearly on the Death Star looming ominously in the background as a battle rages on the beach below. Episode IV is also referenced in the tagline on the poster, which reads “A rebellion built on hope.”
