Taking Back Sunday up the punx with “Tidal Wave” music video

taking back sunday Tidal Wave

Just a day after sharing plans to a release a new album of the same name, emo and alternative heroes Taking Back Sunday have released the official video for their new single, “Tidal Wave.”

You never really know what to expect when Taking Back Sunday announce a new record, and that continues to be true after experiencing “Tidal Wave” for the first time. The song, which you can enjoy below, brings to mind everything from The Ramones to Beach Slang, to Against Me! Mentioning any of these bands in relation to material from Taking Back Sunday is sure to raise eyebrows amongst the group’s most devoted followers, but the driving rock track is undeniably the product of the same men who gave us Happiness Is back in 2014. There is a heart and soul to the music of Taking Back Sunday that even the most punk-laden riffs cannot bury or hide. “Tidal Wave” is definitely a step in a new direction, but it’s one born out of everything the band has done in the past. Check it out:

The footage you see in the video above was captured during the opening days of this summer’s Taste Of Chaos tour, which finds Taking Back Sunday sharing a stage with fellow emo pioneer Dashboard Confessional all over the continental US. The band performs in front of an American flag backdrop every single night, and one has to wonder if the lyrics found within “Tidal Wave” are meant to be a reflection of what it’s like to live in The States in 2016. There is a sense of urgency to every line, as if the band is demanding you to choose whether listeners will fight or let those who wish to lead us to almost certain doom walk all over them. I wouldn’t go as far as to call it a pure protest song, but the band is asking fans to consider the world around them and what, if anything, can be done to make it a better place for everyone involved.

Taking Back Sunday will release Tidal Wave this September through Hopeless Records. Comment below and let us know your thoughts on this song.
