Pacific Rim was Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 action film about giant robots beating up monsters, and it was a solidly enjoyable experience. While this idea of robots (called Jaegers) and monsters (Kaiju) seems ripe for sequels galore, the follow-up to the film has had a rocky history. There have been a good number of delays, and the film was even put on hold for a while back in September of 2015, but today we have news that gives us hope for the film. As first reported by Deadline, Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ John Boyega has signed on to star in Pacific Rim 2 (tentatively titled Maelstrom).
Boyega will be starring as the son of Idris Elba’s character in the first film, Stacker Pentecost. This news confirms that Maelstrom will take place many years after the events depicted in the first Pacific Rim. Del Toro is apparently thrilled about the casting, stating in a press release:
“I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The ‘Pacific Rim ‘universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”
Steven S. DeKnight (Spartacus) is set to direct the film, which will enter production at the end of 2016. Check back in, as we’ll keep you updated on any more news about the project.
