PREMIERE: Gates’ “Empty Canvas” is a lush, soaring number about the importance of original thought

To describe New Brunswick, New Jersey, quintet Gates as a “breath of fresh air” is certainly a cliché statement, but highly accurate nonetheless. The band’s music straddles the line between post-rock and post-hardcore, totally willing to embrace the power of dynamics and mood but unafraid to explode when needed. Their new album, Parallel Lives, is one of the best records this editor has heard all year thus far; today, we’re premiering one of Parallel Lives‘ best tracks, the gorgeous “Empty Canvas.”  The band explains:

“’Empty Canvas’ is about vacuous carbon-copy content created on the shoulders of others meant solely for the purpose of gaining self-traction. It’s written from the point of view of someone who has to convince themselves that what they do matters despite reality. It was partially inspired by a story my dad told me about young hires in corporate settings, and partially inspired by the practice of ‘content curation’ on the internet. It’s about the importance I place on original thought, and praising, supporting and uplifting those who are lucky enough to have them regardless of how that might benefit one’s self.”

Gates’ Parallel Lives will be released June 3 via Pure Noise Records and can be pre-ordered now (physical/digital).
