Lionsgate is really excited about their upcoming Power Rangers movie. So excited, in fact, that the studio is apparently planning to make up to six additional films if the new title is as successful as they believe it will be.
Speaking to a group of industry analysts Thursday morning, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer spilled the beans regarding the studio’s plans to milk the Power Rangers brand for all it’s worth. “We are really, really excited about the ‘Power Rangers’ movie,” Feltheimer said over the phone. “We could see doing five or six or seven.”
Feltheimer later cited the largely positive reaction to the characters’ costume reveal earlier this year as evidence of audience interest. The suits in question, which you can see in the image above, consist of translucent armor that crystallizes around the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ bodies. This is not a complete departure from how the suits worked in the original television series, but it is a look that is unique to the new film.
Power Rangers is being directed by Dean Israelite off a script that has five credited writers. The film will star five young actors in the lead roles, with Becky G as the Yellow Ranger, Ludi Lin as the Black Ranger, Naomi Scott as the Pink Ranger, Dacre Montgomery as the Red Ranger and RJ Cyler as the Blue Ranger. Elizabeth Banks, who honestly could have directed the film as well, will play the evil alien witch Rita Repulsa.
Here’s what Banks’ character will look like in the film:
The last time Power Rangers entered cinemas was twenty-one years ago with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie. That film, which cost just $15 million to make, eventually grossed more than $66 million at the domestic box office.
The new and improved Power Rangers opens on March 24, 2017. No trailer or teaser has been released at this time, but we expect to start seeing footage no later than the end of Summer. Stay tuned.
