There are few comics more iconic than Alan Moore’s incredibly dark Batman tale, The Killing Joke. The story follows Batman as he faces off against his arch-nemesis, The Joker, following a brutal assault against Barbara Gordon that leave the one-time Batgirl confined to a wheelchair. It’s considered one of the most controversial stories in all of comic history, and later this year it’s being brought to life as DC Comics’ first R-rated animated feature.
Today, the first official trailer for Batman: The Killing Joke appeared online. The footage teases several key sequences from the comic, as well as the voice work of Kevin Conroy (Batman) and Mark Hamill (Joker). You can view the footage below.
The end of the trailer reveals a glimpse at the box art that will accompany the film, but no release date for the feature has been set beyond its world premiere at San Diego Comic-Con this July. That said, the film is available for pre-order on DVD and blu-ray through Amazon right now.
If you’re curious about The Killing Joke we recommend making time for the original comic between now and the movie’s release. Amazon has the hardcover version of the story available for under $12, but you may be able to find a copy for even cheaper on eBay.
