When it came time to shoot a music video for their self-titled debut, Grand Rapids, Michigan’s the Cardboard Swords didn’t want to do the same ol’ thing. So instead, the emotional indie-pop quartet recruited a bunch of kids to outfit with—you guessed it—cardboard swords, as well as corrugated suits of armor, and lo and behold, you have the Sean Mouton-directed clip for “Brian’s Song,” an adolescent LARPer’s paradise. Vocalist/guitarist Tyler DeCoeur explains:
“We wanted something less conventional that didn’t involve common music aspects. The idea was to authentically but playfully bring a Lord of the Rings-esque childhood fantasy to life, but with a strong narrative in the short period of the song. I think Sean and the kids and crew nailed it.”
The Cardboard Swords’ The Cardboard Swords will be released November 6 on Count Your Lucky Stars Records and can be pre-ordered here.
The Cardboard Swords has a trio of Michigan shows on their slate:
Oct 22 Hunter’s Ale House Mount Pleasant, MI
Oct 25 The Pyramid Scheme Grand Rapids, MI w/Title Fight
